Chapter 1

The Mystery

The opening chapter of the Tao Te Ching introduces the fundamental paradox - that the ultimate reality cannot be captured in words or concepts.

The Mystery

The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao.
The name that can be named is not the eternal name.

Without a name, it is the source of heaven and earth.
With a name, it becomes the mother of all things.

Free from desire, you see the hidden essence.
Bound by desire, you see only the surface.

Both arise from the same source.
Though named differently, they point to the same truth.

This unity is called Mystery.
Mystery within mystery —
the gateway to all wonder.
